The story

The open-air velodrome in Zurich Oerlikon is 114 years old — a proud age for a venue that has come close to closing countless times over the past decades. Its long life has seen many highs and lows. In its great years — between the two world wars, and later, when Ferdy Kübler and Hugo Koblet fought their duels — more than 10,000 spectators regularly filled its stands. Later, it slipped out of the spotlight.

Today the velodrome is in regular use again — for evening track races and for training Switzerland’s young track cyclists. The highlight of the year is a combined event of track racing and an exhibition of historic racing cars and motorcycles, which draws attention from across the country and abroad.

Why the velodrome is one of my favourite buildings in Zurich: it does not impose itself or claim the centre of attention. Its architect’s name is not what matters. It is not about individuals or firms, nor about standing out — you could call it the opposite of egocentric architecture.

Instead, the Offene Rennbahn Oerlikon is a stage, at times a circus ring, for the people and athletes who come here to pursue their passion. A stage for being together, where very different characters unite around a shared interest. Young ride with old, strong with weak.

It also shows how free enterprise can spark a community spirit that works without state direction. Community spirit and shared commitment carry this place to this day — selflessly, and with passion.
